Cross-curricular topics: Summer term

Year 2: Amazing Animals

As writers we will be looking at the key features of non-fiction texts and writing our own ones about Big Cats and about Beatrix Potter. We will also be writing riddles describing our favourite animal and creating our own version of a traditional tale.

As readers we will looking at texts by Beatrix Potter, non-fiction texts about animals and traditional tales.

As scientists we are looking at animal habitats and micro habitats. Sorting and classifying animals into their different groups and species. We will also be looking at food chains and life processes. We will learn about the work of environmentalist Rachel Carson and consider the impact of water pollution. We will also be planning a ‘Snail Day’ !

As artists we will be creating sculptures inspired by the work of of Andy Goldsworthy.

As researchers we will be designing and creating Powerpoints using our ICT skills and giving presentations to share our research with others.

As historians we will use primary and secondary sources to study the life of Beatrix Potter. We will look at Victorian society, the similarities and differences between then and now and how rich and poor children lived in Victorian times.

As geographers we will consider how Beatrix Potter’s commitment to farming and the local environment has influenced our local environment

As musicians we will learn and perform songs for our summer production. We will also collaborate to compose our own music to accompany dances in the show.
