Cross-curricular topics: Autumn term

Year 1: Out and About

As writers we will write stories and poetry set in familiar places. We will also write information texts related to seasonal changes and to the weather.

As readers we will read stories, poems and non-fiction texts related to the outdoors and to the weather.

As scientists we will explore the world around us observing changes over time. We will make connections between the weather, day length and the seasons. We will perform simple tests to measure rain fall and record results.

As geographers we will study key landmarks in our local area. We will identify ways to make our local area cleaner and safer. We will draw simple maps, use directional vocabulary and construct basic keys. We will use maps, globes and atlases to identify, name and locate the UK’s 4 countries, their capital cities and surrounding seas. We will identify and observe seasonal and daily weather patterns and changes in the UK.

As artists we will look at how artists and designers use colour, shape and pattern when printing. We will use natural found objects to create or own prints in the style of Richard Long and Robi Smith.

As designers we will design and make a range of moving pictures using hinges, sliders and levers.

As musicians we will use our voices expressively and creatively. We will use a range of percussion instruments.

In RE much of our work will focus on Harvest and Creation.
