Year 5 (ii): All Change

Cross-curricular topics: Spring term

As writers we will look at a range of different text types from producing invitations to Viking feasts, job advertisements and wanted posters, through to letters, recounts and explanation texts on how to kill a monster! We will produce newspaper reports from key moments in the lives of Martin Luther King and Rosa Park.

As readers we will read stories, poems, maps and fact files which will explore what it was like during Viking and Anglo Saxon times. We will also focus on the biography of Martin Luther King and look at the story of Malala and the changes they both campaigned for.

As mathematicians we will look at the symmetry, translation and reflection involved in Nordic designs, focusing on describing the shape once it has moved. We will look at historical, numerical data in tables and graphs, interpreting accordingly.

As scientists we will be looking at the changes which occur when we mix and combine materials (dissolving and evaporating), considering how we can separate them once mixed. We will be grouping materials according to their properties and looking at the changes and stages involved in both human and animal life cycles.

As historians we will investigate and discover what life was really like during the Viking period, focusing on invasion, raids and settlement.

As geographers we will locate key Viking countries and look at how their settlement and battles affected land use and place names.

As designers we will create our own Nordic patterns and design and build a model of a Viking long ship.

As musicians we will listen to a range of songs which have influenced modern day change e.g. ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon and the Band Aid song. We will then attempt to compose our own songs for change.

  • How parents can support learning at home

Look for everyday examples of dissolving and evaporating (e.g. making a cup of coffee or the washing drying outside on the washing line) and talk about what is happening.

Visit the library and see if you can find any books about the Vikings. The Horrible Histories book ‘The Vicious Vikings’ is always fun to read.
