Cross-curricular topics: Spring term

Year 4: Chocolate

As readers and writers, we will be enjoying a variety of related text types, such as Mexican folktales and short stories.  We will be exploring the Roald Dahl story ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and finding out about its famous author.  We will be researching the Maya people, finding relevant information and making sense of what we read. We will present research information about the Maya.

As scientists, we will be learning about the different properties of various materials and how certain properties can be changed through heating or cooling.  We will be looking at the functions of the human digestive system and the types and different functions of our teeth. We also find out about animals both in the UK and Mexico; explore their habitats and how animals and plants can be grouped into categories.

As historians, we will be finding out about the Ancient Mayan people – their culture, religion and beliefs.  We will discover what the Maya did that still impacts our lives today.

As geographers we will be exploring Mexico (& Mesoamerica), both past and present, and making comparisons with the United Kingdom.

As artists and designers we will be painting with chocolate, making Mexican inspired collages, inventing packaging for snack products and recreating recipes from Mexico.

As musicians we will be finding out more about music performed in Mexico today as well as uncovering ancient music from the Maya tradition.  We will explore the music used in the film ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’.

    Explain to your child what chocolate was like when you were young – did you experience the same variety of choice as today? Did it taste different? If possible, get grandparents or older relatives to do the same.
