Cross-curricular topics: Spring term

Year 3: Tomb Raiders

As writers we will be focusing on narrative texts. We will begin by writing our own version of a fairy tale in an Egyptian setting, and move onto writing our own adventure stories.

As readers we will be practising skimming and scanning to retrieve information, and identifying and defining new vocabulary. We will be sharing a range of non-fiction stories to inspire our writing as well as enjoying lots of Egyptian information books.

As mathematicians, we will be learning more about multiplication and division, measuring perimeter and learning to interpret statistics. We will also look at the Ancient Egyptian number system.

As scientists we will be learning about light and shadow and relating this to the lives of the Ancient Egyptians. They had to adapt to living in the bright sunlight of the desert. We will also be learning about the functions of the different parts of plants and the things they need to survive and relating this to the Ancient Egyptian’s farming methods. We will be learning in the Hidden Haven and growing our own crops.

As historians we will be exploring Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. We will consider what we can learn about life in Ancient Egypt from the items that were found in the tomb. We will consider the achievements of the Ancient Egyptian civilisation and compare their way of life to that of other ancient civilisations.

As artists and designers we will be improving our drawing skills. We will be drawing using different scales, both independently and collaboratively. We will focus on how we can use lines and tone to show light and shadow. We will also be looking at Egyptian art and use their techniques to draw people in proportion.
