Cross-curricular topics: Spring term

Year 2: Katie Morag and Island Homes

As writers we will be looking at travel brochures and advertising an  island using persuasive writing.  We will also be comparing texts written by the author Mairi Hedderwick and writing our own play scripts.

As readers we will looking at texts by Mairi Hedderwick and learning new vocabulary.  We will also be reading a variety of play scripts.

As mathematicians we will be looking at measure and mass – and link it to working in a post office, like in the Katie Morag stories.

As geographers we will exploring different islands. Looking particularly at the features of the imaginary Isle of Struay and the real St Lucia and comparing similarities and differences.

As designers we will be designing purposefully functional vehicles that could be used for transport on an island.

 In computing we will learn how to send and receive emails with attachments.

    Look at islands in an atlas especially the Scottish Islands and St Lucia.
    Visit a travel agent and post office.
    Weighing – maybe while cooking or baking.
    Looking at how different vehicles move.
