Cross-curricular topics: Spring term

Year 1: Living Things

As writers we will write sentences which rhyme, poems using sensory words and stories using predictable and patterned language. We will also write recounts write information texts relating to plants and animals.

As readers we will read stories and non-fiction texts related to plants, and animals. Poems will relate to using our senses, with alliteration and rhyme.

As scientists we will explore the world around us, raising questions and comparing similarities and differences between plants and animals. We will sort and group living things. We will learn more about ourselves.

As geographers we will continue to monitor the weather and identify seasonal changes.

As artists we will explore the use of line, tone, shape and pattern to develop our own drawing skills. We will draw self-portraits.

As cooks we will become familiar with a wide range of fruit and vegetables. We will develop our cutting, peeling and grating skills. We will design, make and evaluate our own fruit salads.

As musicians we will use musical instruments and our own voices to create music.

In computing we will learn how to use technology purposefully to write and draw images. We will learn how to use the internet safely.

In RE much of our work will focus on living things as God’s creations. We will also think about how Christians celebrate Easter.

  • How parents can support learning at home

    Discuss what different animals eat. Identify whether this makes them carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.

    Identify and name a variety of common plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.

    Try new foods. Use a peeler, knife and grater to help prepare food.

    We will be finding out about different organisations that raise funds to support wildlife.

    We will be developing our ability to manage distractions; we will learn what distract ourselves and others, how to minimise distractions and how to focus and settle back quickly.

  • Christian Values

    We will focus on thankfulness, endurance and justice, through our work this term.

  • Global Learning

    As Global Learners we will be exploring mankind’s impact on habitats and wildlife and consider conservation.
