Cross-curricular topics: Autumn term

Year 6: Eureka!

As writers we will write stories, diaries and newspaper articles as well as researching and write a non-chronological report on Ancient Greece.

As readers we will be focusing on the novel ‘Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief’ and reading myths & legends, poems and a range of non-fiction texts which explore the life of the Ancient Greeks.

As mathematicians we will secure our understanding of place value and the four written methods of calculation. We will also explore factors and multiples and the attributes of prime, square and cubed numbers.

As scientists we will recognise that light appears to travel in a straight line (proposed by Euclid in 300BC) and use this idea to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.  We will look at some early inventions of Ancient Greece and the impact they have on our lives today.

As historians we will study ancient Greek life & their achievements.  We will consider their influence on the western world both at the time and today.

As geographers we will use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate Greece and describe its key physical and human features.

As artists and designers we will create sketch books to record our observations. We will alsodesign and create mythical beast eyes from clay and study Ancient Greek artefacts for inspiration.

As coders we will design, create and test a computer game inspired by the story of Theseus and the minotaur.
